Letting GoOn November 30th 2004 Christopher conducted Bill Russell and Janet Hood's Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens in Warwick Arts Centre's Butterworth Hall as part of a high profile charity concert. Produced by Tim Connor, Letting Go brought together over 100 singers and musicians and the programme included the UK premiere of Do Not Turn Away (John Bucchino) which Christopher accompanied. Christopher also sang in Gareth Valentine's Requiem in memory of all those who have died from AIDS, conducted by Paul McGrath. About The ShowDo Not Turn Away (1992) - UK Premiere Elegies for Angels Punks and Raging Queens (1989) Requiem Elegies is a musical theatre piece depicting the lives of people who have lived with and died from AIDS. The songs reflect the feeling of the living; the people who have felt the loss of so many friends and loved ones. It was inspired by the Names Project Quilt which was started in Washington DC in 1987. Friends and family of those who had lost the fight against the AIDS epidemic decided to make 6' by 3' panels each representing an individual lost to AIDS creating a patchwork quilt. By 1992 the quilt covered seventeen acres. “Elegies.. is a brave and dangerous venture which, were it not for the beautiful writing, could have fallen into a ditch of pious sentimentality. Instead it's great. Moving and inspiring.” The Sydney Morning Herald
'Notes from Chris'Years on, Letting Go is a project that is still vivid in my meory. It really is one of the most special events I've ever been involved with. The music of Elegies succeeds in communicating genuine warmth of emotion and cannot fail to captivate you. The songs offer challenges to the performer, but our cast had the talent and vitality that was needed to make this concert the momentous occasion it deserved to be. Special thanks go from me to Tim Connor for asking me to work with him on this special project and to Gareth Valentine for his wonderful support. |
